(May 14, 2025) – Breggo Cellars has re-opened its tasting room in the historic apple drying barn in Philo, California (formerly Phillips Hill) and invites everyone in the hospitality industry to visit in May or June for a complimentary tasting of what makes Anderson Valley a destination for incredible wines.
Enjoy the still and sparkling wines of Breggo Cellars and Lichen Estate over the annual Pinot Fest Weekend May 16-18, 2025, and stop by both wineries at open houses on Sunday, May 18th. The Grand Tasting on Saturday, May 17th will feature a selection of Pinot Noir-based Lichen Estate and Breggo Cellars wines.
Breggo celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year after an adventure in winemaking. Breggo was founded in 2005 by Doug & Ana Stewart on their farm in Boonville in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County. The Stewarts sold the brand to Cliff Lede in 2009 and bought it back in 2023. In the interim they started Lichen Estate in 2012, making dazzling sparkling and still Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from their estate vineyard.
In its first vintages, Breggo (the word for ‘sheep’ in boontling, a local dialect) quickly became known for its complex Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, and aromatic white wines such as Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate) famously called Breggo’s 2006 Pinot Gris the “finest ever in the New World.”
Breggo Cellars just released wines from 2023, the first vintage made back in Anderson Valley at Lichen Estate by the new winemaker Shawn Phillips. Early reviews are in, with Decanter Magazine rating the line-up 91 to 94 points. Breggo is back, baby, and both founding winemaker Doug and current winemaker Shawn will be pouring at Pinot Fest.
The 2023 vintage marks the first full line-up of Breggo Cellars’ wines made in-house at the Lichen Estate mothership. The winery features Ferrington Vineyards Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir and Golden Fleece Vineyards Pinot Noir. And, there are sparklers in the works. Come taste them all!
