Rare and Historic Varietals Offered to the Public

March 12, 2025 (Calistoga, CA) — Since 1919 the Tedeschi Family has been making wine in Calistoga, the northernmost town in Napa Valley.  Together brothers Emilio & Mario Tedeschi, fourth generation, are preserving historic vineyards and offering them as standalone varietals to the public to taste in the walnut grove at the family’s home. Their tasting fee almost feels historic, too, at $35 per person and still refunded with purchase.

The newest releases include Carignane, Viognier, and Valdiguié from Napa Valley.

If you’ve not had these historic varietals or are already a fan, you owe it to yourself to come and taste.  With their homestyle hospitality, it is a step back in time and worth the trip up-valley.

“We like a variety of wines on our own dinner table during family gatherings”, says Mario Tedeschi, “We consider being a small family winery a big advantage for this goal; we can make small lots of specialty wines that drink just as easily by the glass as they do with food. We produce 12 different wines with a total annual production of around 2,000 cases, all made traditionally, in the style of the Old World. If our great-grandfather jumped back into our cellar today, he wouldn’t be very lost (although he’d probably love the de-stemmer)! Make an appointment, come by and try these new releases – we love showcasing these hard-to-find wines for our guests.”

About Tedeschi Family Winery
The Tedeschi family settled in Calistoga in 1919, having emigrated from Pisa, Italy.  Eugene, the first born here in Calistoga, acquired the property that currently houses the winery and family home in 1951, where he planted his first grapevines among the family’s established walnut orchards. In 1991, Emil, Eugene’s son returned as steward after co-founding one of Hawaii’s most successful wineries: Tedeschi Vineyards – Maui, now known as Maui Wine.

The Calistoga winery has become the passion and single focus of Emil’s two sons. Together, with Emilio Tedeschi acting as General Manager, Mario Tedeschi as Vineyard Manager, and veteran winemaker David Sundberg making the wine, they have sought out and committed to handcrafting old-world style wines from several small and neighboring vineyards to produce Carignane, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petite Sirah, Primitivo, Viognier, Rosé of Carignane, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and an off-dry white blend named for their aunt “Fran’s Pick”.  Each of the vineyards are specially selected and hand tended. After hand harvesting, all lots are fermented on-site in open top bins with daily punch-downs then barrel aged.

Tedeschi Family Winery is located at 2779 Grant Street, Calistoga, CA 94515, just one mile north of downtown Calistoga. Visitors are invited to the winery daily by appointment from 11:00 to 5:00 for tasting. There is no commercial signage, so look for the address (2779 Grant St) and a few wine barrels to enjoy the winery’s private setting.
