Pommard 1897 – A rare legend of the Côte de Beaune to discover at Domaine François Gaunoux
March 5, 2025 (Meursault, France) — Previously announced as the second physical auction of Baghera/wines on French soil, the DOMAINE FRANÇOIS GAUNOUX – Climats de Famille auction will take place on March 16, 2025, directly at the Gaunoux estate. As part of this exceptional spring auction, a rare and timeless gem from Burgundy will be featured: a Pommard from 1897, coming from the historic cellars of Domaine Gaunoux. It has traversed decades with incomparable majesty – this wine embodies the soul of the Côte de Beaune and the family heritage of the Gaunoux family.

An exceptional Pommard from 1897
Marking the birth year of Henri Gaunoux, father of François and grandfather of Claudine Gaunoux, the current owner of the estate, this incredible 1897 vintage embodies the craftsmanship and passion of winemakers from the past. The winemaker’s notes for the 1897 vintage specify that there was a frost episode in May, followed by a hailstorm at the very end of June 1897. The harvest itself took place in mid-September—some scribbled notes that take us back to the exceptional weather conditions that gave birth to this great wine.
Produced in a year marked by finesse and balance, the Pommard 1897 from Gaunoux has withstood the passage of time, maintaining its brilliance and complexity. Few wines in the world can claim such impressive longevity and richness.
Claudine Gaunoux shares her thoughts on the tasting experience of this great wine: “Tasting this Pommard 1897 is a true journey that awakens all the senses. The subtle notes of liquorice blend with exceptional finesse, revealing the full elegance of a nod to Pinot Noir. This wine stands out for its rare complexity, with unexpected elements: its airy character and refined structure, reflecting an aging process carried out with admirable delicacy. It is an experience of great purity, showcasing the markers of the great terroirs of Pommard.”
Michael Ganne, Founder of Baghera/wines, adds: “Anyone who has tasted a great 19th-century Burgundy with such provenance knows that this Pommard 1897 from Domaine François Gaunoux will be a lively and unforgettable tasting experience. It is the result of passionate and meticulous work, passed down through several generations – as with all the wines we have selected for this auction. At Baghera/wines, we are dedicated to uncovering unique oenological treasures, and this can only happen if we build deep connections with winemakers, first through pleasure, then to offer our clients unique experiences filled with emotion.“
