Cork Supply Creates Legacy, the World’s Most Consistent Cork Closure

  • The Portuguese company invested 1.2 million Euro in innovative and patented technology that analyzes 100% of the closures so as to eliminate anomalous cases of oxygen ingress, providing the most consistent performance cork closures on the market.
  • The Legacy closure is the culmination of over a decade of investments in the search for the perfect closure and the only one in the world which guarantees returned bottle buy back.
  • Cork Supply has invested 11 million Euro in cork closure innovation over the past decade.

Lisbon, January 24, 2024 – Cork Supply, a Portuguese company specializing in natural and technical closures for still and sparkling wines, has just launched Legacy, the most consistent and premium natural cork closure on the market.

Legacy is the result of several Cork Supply innovations, including the new and patented X100 technology, developed together with a technological partner and representing an investment of 1.2 million Euro.

This patented and certified technology allows for individual analyses of 100% of the natural closures of a lot so as to eliminate abnormal cases of oxygen ingress that cannot be detected and eliminated by other existing physical methods. The X100 analyzes the internal structure of natural closures and detects the anomalous cases that can allow for the ingress of 10 times more oxygen than other closures, detecting “characteristics” that are not visible to the naked eye on the outside of the closure.

This new X100 technology is applied to the natural cork closure after being subjected to the TCA (molecule responsible for the “musty” aroma) detection innovations DS100 and DS100+, also developed by Cork Supply in the last decade.

The result of this integrated process is Legacy, the most consistent natural closure on the market, individually classified, and with a bottle buy back guarantee.

The DS100 service consists of a comprehensive non-invasive and non-destructive analysis of the cork closures within a batch, carried out by a panel of highly specialized testers and which guarantees the elimination of cork closures with sensory deviations, including TCA. Cork Supply later developed the DS100+, an automatic TCA detection technology in natural closures which not only increases production capacity but also strengthens the individual guarantee of TCA-free natural closures.

Cork Supply’s investment in these innovations has reached 11 million Euro over the last decade. Cork Supply has been working on the X100  technology since 2012, the time necessary to create the algorithm that correlates the structure of the closure and its oxygen ingress.

“We’ve been obsessed with the perfect cork closure since we launched Cork Supply in the 1980s. We have always invested in technologies, creating patents and solutions that allow us to reach the premium market today with the natural cork closure closer to perfection in the market,” says Jochen Michalski, president and founder of Cork Supply.

“The new technology is the pinnacle of a decade of research and raises the status of the natural cork closure and the position of Cork Supply as an innovation leader in this field,” he adds.

The X100 technology and Legacy closure were unveiled at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium, an industry event taking place in Sacramento, California.
