A Sustainable Agriculture Action Plan Released
July 14, 2023 (Paso Robles, Calif.) –The Paso Robles CAB Collective (PRCC) announces the release of its Sustainable Agriculture Action Plan (SAAP). The Sustainable Agriculture Action Plan for Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux (CAB) wine production in Paso Robles is a pilot document developed by Paso Robles CAB Collective winegrape growers, winemakers, marketers, proprietors, and other wine industry stakeholders for Western SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education). The plan addresses the specific needs of the Paso Robles CAB winegrape growing and wine production industries and provides actionable recommendations to improve sustainability models and adapt to the challenges presented by climate change. Through this research, Paso Robles vintners will continue to produce world-class quality wines while sustaining their economic benefit to the local community.
The Paso Robles CAB Collective was awarded the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research Education Grant through Montana State University to create the SAAP. The $15,000 grant provided resources for the PRCC to embark on six months of research to help identify top priorities and key needs for regulatory changes, education, research, and training needed to sustain the Paso Robles wine industry while addressing the impacts of climate change.
“It is our hope that the Sustainable Agriculture Action Plan will assist the wine industry in understanding the barriers to implementing sustainable practices across the vineyard, winery, distribution, and marketing sectors,” said PRCC Executive Director Linda Sanpei. “The roadmap will assist in the development of future strategies by identifying key priorities for research, regulations, education, and innovation, not only for our Paso Robles CAB Collective members but also the wine industry at large,” continued Sanpei.
As a representative of the Californian wine industry, the Paso Robles CAB Collective holds a unique responsibility to address regional challenges and find solutions tailored to their specific growing conditions. With a commitment to the longevity of quality wine production in Paso Robles, the PRCC has long embraced sustainable agriculture and climate-smart practices. Their concerns about climate change, sustainable barriers, and the need for research, education, and innovation in these areas reflect their ongoing pursuit of adaptive and mitigating solutions, ensuring the production of exceptional CAB in Paso Robles. The combined research from the powerhouse workshop, interviews, and Swarm AI session provided a roadmap for the priorities of the PRCC members and identified the necessary steps to overcome obstacles, as noted in the report.
The Paso Robles CAB Collective (PRCC) is a 501(c)6 nonprofit agricultural producer group with 24 independent producer members and over 60 wine industry sponsors.
