About Madeira Wine

Madeira Wine is a fortified wine available in a range of dry to sweet styles, originating from the island of Madeira in Portugal. The viticultural region, covering approximately 1,235 acres, holds the Protected Designation of Origin “Madeira” (DOP Madeira). This unique landscape, characterized by steep slopes and predominantly basaltic volcanic soils, benefits from proximity to the sea and a climate marked by hot and humid summers, complemented by mild winters, imparting unique characteristics to the wines and an exceptional winemaking and aging process.

Dry styles of Madeira are served chilled, while sweeter styles are often enjoyed as after-dinner sippers. Madeira wines are produced as both non-vintage blends and single-vintage wines with centuries of aging potential.

The Sercial, Verdelho, Boal, Malvasia, and Tinta Negra varieties are the most utilized and traditional grapes in Madeira winemaking, each bearing distinct designations to identify their different styles. These designations include Indication of Age, Frasqueira or Garrafeira (indicating vintage year and a minimum aging of 20 years in casks), and Colheita (indicating vintage year and a minimum aging of 5 years). Madeira Wines are also classified according to their degree of sweetness: Dry, Medium Dry, Medium Sweet, and Sweet.
