February 27th – Throughout the donation drive, Tinte is showcasing the art of Consuelo Soto Murphy at its Georgetown location.
Consuelo Soto Murphy grew up as a child migrant worker in the Yakima Valley with her eight siblings. Her art is inspired by positive memories of the beautiful landscapes, the flourishing crops, and the love and relationships forged with her family and friends.
Currently, Consuelo’s work is being showcased in the Washington State Governor’s Mansion where she is Artist of the Year.
“Tim and I were recently representing my parents and family at an anniversary celebration for the Governor’s Mansion Foundation,” said Spellman Gamble, whose father, John D. Spellman, was Washington’s 18th governor. “We were enamored with Conseulo’s vibrant work and, in particular, the painting of farmworkers picking grapes which we ultimately acquired as I fell in love with it. I began chatting with Consuelo and learned that her married name is Murphy, and my mother was a Murphy. We kept making more and more connections as we chatted. When she told me how some of her work is hanging in the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinics, I knew she’d be the perfect artist to highlight at Tinte Georgetown during our first quarter focus with the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic and our annual diaper drive.”
Ten percent of all Soto Art sold while on display at Tinte will be donated to the YVFWC.

About Artist Consuelo Soto Murphy
In second grade, Consuelo’s teacher declared her an artist when she held up a drawing of a twisted and very large and brightly colored octopus in front of her class. Consuelo believed her and from that day on she was an artist. Consuelo Soto grew up as a child migrant worker along with her family, doing field work across the United States, season to season, before eventually settling in the Yakima Valley of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Consuelo was the seventh child of nine children. While the older children worked all day in the fields, Consuelo was able to go to school during the day, working before and after school and during the summers.
Consuelo graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1979 and graduated from Eastern Washington University with degrees in Art Education, Studio Art, and K-12 Education. She was the first of her nine siblings to graduate from college. In 1989, Consuelo began teaching Art at Richland High School in Richland, Washington where she taught for 33 years while pursuing her painting career.
She met her husband Shawn Murphy in a Drawing Class at Eastern Washington University, got married, had three children and they both began teaching in the Fine Art Department at Richland High School. He taught Ceramics and still teaches Photography.
While Consuelo works primarily in acrylics on canvas, she is far from limited to this medium. The magnificent pieces produced by Consuelo Soto Murphy have gone to homes all over the world. Her work has been featured in publications and galleries as well as featured on television productions.
