The most creative installation will win a monetary prize and an exposition at the Champagne Pommery estate
(February 20- New York, NY)– The Armory Show announced The Pommery Prize, a $20,000 prize supported by Champagne Pommery, which recognizes an exceptional presentation within the Platform section of the fair where large-scale artworks, installations, and site-specific commissions are staged across Piers 92 & 94. The $20,000 prize, shared between the artist and presenting gallery, will be chosen by a jury of curators and collectors. In addition to the monetary reward, the winning artist will have an opportunity to create a new work for an exhibition at Champagne Pommery in Reims, France.
The 2019 edition of Platform, entitled Worlds of Tomorrow is curated by Sally Tallant, recently appointed Director of the Queens Museum and formerly Director of Liverpool Biennial. Worlds of Tomorrow, which takes the 1939 New York World’s Fair as a point of departure, features nine site-responsive projects by internationally renowned artists: Andreas Angelidakis, Siah Armajani, Tania Candiani, Ryan Gander, Iris Häussler, Xaviera Simmons, Jessica Stockholder, Super Taus, and Pascale Marthine Tayou.
For its inaugural year, the jury for the 2019 Pommery Prize will include Nathalie Vranken, Owner of Champagne Pommery and art-world connoisseur and patron, as well as recognized art curators and industry insiders including Sandra Hegedus. Nathalie Vranken and her team continue to pay homage to Madame Pommery’s clear-sighted plans and love for the arts. Her wine cellars featured monumental bas-relief sculptures carved by Gustave Navlet and she also commissioned Émile Gallé for the largest cask ever sculpted. A woman ahead of her time, Madame Pommery (1819-1890) also donated Jean-François Millet’s The Gleaners to the Louvre, which can now be seen at the Musée d’Orsay. Since 2002, Pommery has continued the tradition by opening the Gallo-Roman chalk cellars and making them accessible each year as a platform for artists to express their talents and create unique works of art each September for their “Expériences Pommery” exhibitions. These exhibitions have garnered significant attention and showcase the champagne producers’ innovation and commitment to the arts.
The Pommery Prize winner of the most creative installation at The Armory Show will be unveiled during a special event on March 7, 2019 at 12:30 PM with a toast of Champagne Pommery.
