DOC Maremma Toscana Wines Ready for Their Debut at Wine Paris

Bottled production up by +8.15% in 2024, with Vermentino driving the appellation’s success

Grosseto, January 27, 2024 – The year 2024 marks the tenth anniversary of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana, which is now gearing up for another year focused on promoting and enhancing the DOC. “In a year full of challenges, we have seen growth in both production and bottled output, as well as an increase in the number of member companies,” says Francesco Mazzei, president of the Consorzio. While satisfied with the progress, he is certain there is still much work to be done to further showcase the efforts of producers in this “young” territory, raise the bar on wine quality, and establish a stronger presence in key markets.

“We’ve achieved some milestones: we managed to close the year surpassing 7 million bottles, which was our goal, and we’ve also seen growing interest in our DOC from the wine industry. The driving force of Vermentino, at a time when white wines are in high demand, is undoubtedly a key factor. Many projects and challenges lie ahead, but we are determined to be ready and to create opportunities for visibility and business with the resources we have. For the first time, we are taking our companies to Paris, onto an important stage, just days before the start of the Anteprime Toscane, where we will again be in the spotlight.”

For the Consorzio, this will mark their debut at the sixth edition of Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris, scheduled from February 10 to 12 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Around thirty companies will present over 50 labels at the Consorzio’s booth to international industry professionals and media. Among the wines available for tasting, professionals will find Vermentino and Ciliegiolo in particular, alongside rosés, international reds, and Supertuscan-style blends.

In Paris, the appellation will showcase itself following a 2024 marked by growth, bucking the trends seen in the rest of Tuscany. Bottled production recorded an increase of 8.15% compared to the previous year, with just under 7.5 million bottles. Vermentino remains the most representative wine, with approximately 2.37 million bottles, accounting for nearly 32% of the total DOC production.

Overall, white wines continue to gain ground, now representing over 42% of total bottled production, up from 2023. Red wines, at 53%, show a slight decline compared to last year’s 55%. Rosés, on the other hand, are on the rise, reaching 5% of bottled production, demonstrating an increasingly appreciated diversification.

The number of Consorzio members has also grown, reaching 473, reflecting the dynamic nature of this appellation and the increasing confidence of producers in its potential. The DOC Maremma Toscana accounts for 33% of the total certified production in the province of Grosseto, confirming it as one-third of the province’s total wine production. This figure highlights the significance and relevance of the DOC for the local economy and the promotion of the territory.
