JUNE 28, 2024 – Winners have been announced in the 17th annual Women’s International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWWSC). The competition, which took place June 10-12 in Santa Rosa, Calif., was founded on the premise that the majority of wine purchased for home consumption is bought by women. The IWWSC judging panels consist entirely of professional women in the wine and spirits industries — winemakers, distillers, marketers, buyers, sommeliers, educators and journalists.
“As always, the International Women’s Wine & Spirits Competition shined a spotlight on hundreds of deserving wines,” says Debra Del Fiorentino, owner of Wine Competitions Management & Production, which organizes and presents IWWSC. “And even though entry is open to all winemakers regardless of gender, I found it gratifying that six of this year’s sweepstakes wines were created by women. And our overall wine winner also was named Best Woman Winemaker.”
This year, Carol Shelton Wines; 2022 Coquille Rouge took the top prize, beating out nearly 300 competitors. A blend inspired by wines of the Rhône Valley, judges described it as a “crowd pleaser”; “dark and ripe, blueberry”; “spicy gum drops”; with “firm tannins and a long finish.”
“I use Mourvèdre as an anchor point, with its firmer tannins and meaty black cherry flavors,” says winemaker Carol Shelton. “[Then I] add to that the very light body and strawberry flavors of Grenache Noir; the slightly tart raspberry fruit of Carignane; the tannin, color and blackberry flavors of Petite Sirah; and then a small percent of Alicante Bouschet, the blue-fleshed teinturier grape that’s in many Zin field blends — it brings lots of chewy tannin and a bit of blueberry fruit flavors.”
She continues, “I added just a pinch of Viognier at the final bottling blend for that little kiss of je ne sais pas quoi, a hint of orange blossom and an opening up of tightly wound tannin structure. My goal is to not have any single varietal dominate but to have each part contribute to the whole, with the final blend an improvement over them all. It is that ‘yum factor’ of the final bottling that makes it special.”
With multiple wines reaching the competition’s sweepstakes round, Shelton was easily named Woman Winemaker of the Year. “It’s always a great validation of the hard work and ‘sweat-spiration’ that’s involved in making any and all of my wines,” she says of the honor. “I actually do feel my wines demonstrate a more polished, ‘finished’ product, which some folks have called a ‘feminine touch,’ so being Woman Winemaker of the Year fits me to a T!”
Turning to spirits, judges recognized Von Payne Spirits’ Black, a black currant infused bourbon, as Best of the Best and Best Bourbon (Infused). Company founder Steve Allen says, “As Von Payne was inspired by my five daughters, this award means even more to me. It validates the achievement of our goal to produce a bourbon that appeals to a more diverse market.”
“This is only our third year including spirits in this competition,” says Del Fiorentino. “I’m pleased with the category’s growth since then. We continue to add entry volume and product quality every year, and our judges appreciate being exposed to new releases and companies.”
Zandra Gómez Santiago was named best Woman Distiller in recognition for her Suavecito Tequila, specifically the Destiladora Agave Azul, which judges called “Fruity, easy” with “Tropical flavors, silky mouthfeel.” Ultimately, they concurred, “Very well made.”
This year’s IWWSC awarded gold medals (or higher) to twice as many wines as it did last year. A list of Sweepstakes wines and Best of Class spirits follows this press release.
