Consorzio Asti DOCG: the Harvest for the Largest Denomination in Piedmont Begins Today. A Harvest of around 1 Million Quintals Is Expected, in Line with 2022
Asti, August 24, 2023 – Overall excellent quality with yields in line with previous years. These are the forecasts for the 2023 Asti DOCG harvest, with harvesting starting today in the Acquese area, followed in the coming days by the early ripening zones of the mid-hills, then extending to the intermediate areas at the end of the month, concluding in the high hills in September. According to the calculations of the Consorzio, the white Moscato grapes are currently in good phytosanitary condition with a low presence of pathogens such as downy mildew and powdery mildew, which have not significantly affected the production level. In terms of quantity, production should be around one million quintals (approximately 750,000 hectoliters), a value like that achieved in previous years, corresponding to about one hundred million bottles.
According to the vice president of the Consorzio Asti DOCG, Stefano Ricagno: “2023 has been a complex year in terms of weather, characterized by periods of extreme heat and prolonged drought alternated with adverse phenomena such as the hailstorms in July and August, which fortunately only marginally affected the denomination. A complexity to which, however, businesses and producers have responded with increasingly refined techniques that have contributed to dealing with climate adversities in the best possible way. The production potential remains in line with previous years, with the grape setting proceeding regularly, except in a few extreme cases where water stress and temperature drops related to the rains in May and June made themselves felt.”
