Palisade, CO August 23, 2023 – Sauvage Spectrum’s estate grown and produced 2022 Malbec and 2022 Teroldego were recently awarded the highest honor with a Double Gold medal at the 2023 Colorado Governor’s Cup. These wines showed exceptional depth and drinkability beyond any other wine in the competition; a world-class wine. Colorado’s best wines of the year are determined by a panel of 19 judges made up of sommeliers, winemakers & wine writers flown in from around the country. The Teroldego grown from our estate vineyard has scored Double Gold medals prior and has placed in the Governor’s case for 3 years running now with this newly presented award for 2023.

Pioneered for Colorado with the first vineyard planting in the state nearly 8 years ago. Winegrower Kaibab Sauvage had the foresight to understand what grows at the base of the Dolomites in Northern Italy might fare well in the high desert of Colorado. Expect intense black cherry and blackberry pie with a plush mouthfeel. Notes of dried mission fig, star anise, and lingering cacao powder adorn the palate. This is the most exciting example yet to showcase the uniqueness of the grape that Colorado is adopting as it’s new favorite red.

There’s a secret amongst the Winemakers in the Grand Valley that the top quality berries can be found nestled up next to the Palisade Rim Cliffs. The water table is lower resulting in grapes that are tiny. More skin to juice ratio and high levels of solar radiation bouncing off the cliffs result in the most concentrated, full-bodied red wines. Flavors of blackberry jam, mocha, and lingering baking spice compliment the smooth but firm tannins on this show stopping wine.

After working together on numerous wine projects, Winemaker Patric Matysiewski and Grapegrower Kaibab Sauvage formed a partnership in 2019 with the goal to create a new breed of estate winery, Sauvage Spectrum. Their first release, Sparklet is a lifestyle brand focused on fun, fruit-forward, & affordable sparkling wines. Handcrafted, artisanal blends are grown with the intention to produce a modern sparkling wine. Nominal interference in the cellar highlights our premium high desert fruit. Unusual and rare blends allow us to exercise creativity showcasing the versatility of Colorado wines without being tied to tradition. Sauvage Spectrum is 100% Colorado estate grown and bottled. Our Owners are hands-on and visible in the production of our grapes and wine every day, in the vineyard and winery.
Our vineyards are situated in the Grand Valley AVA, and the magical town of Palisade sitting at 4,728′. Grown with melted snow from the steep slopes of the Rocky Mountains, via irrigation from the Colorado River. The “million-dollar breeze” blows through the high desert valley, developing thick skins on our grapes. The sunshine beats down on the valley floor, an ancient riverbed, radiating off the Bookcliffs and surrounding mesas. Warm days and cool nights allow our fruit to ripen but retain acidity for balance. Alluvium silt, sand, and clay loam soils with the addition of volcanic rock lend a unique minerality to our wines. Every year new grape varietals are planted for research and development, to further define the future of Colorado wine. We are not interested in mimicking wines from other regions. We are developing grapes with the intention to produce the true taste of Colorado wines.
