Bordeaux, 15 June 2023 – The Great Wine Capitals Global Network (GWC) has unveiled an exciting initiative, the Great Wine Capital Global Network Research Grant, designed to enhance excellence and innovation in wine tourism research while addressing industry needs. The project will award two grants, each worth €7,500, to applicants who present outstanding academic research with significant practical implications in the field of wine tourism.
Comprising 12 prestigious wine capitals from around the world, including Adelaide | South Australia, Bilbao | Rioja (Spain), Bordeaux (France), Cape Town | Cape Winelands (South Africa), Hawke’s Bay (New Zealand), Lausanne (Switzerland), Mainz | Rheinhessen (Germany), Mendoza (Argentina), Porto (Portugal), San Francisco | Napa Valley (USA), Valparaiso | Casablanca Valley (Chile), and Verona (Italy), the Great Wine Capitals Global Network serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, fostering business collaborations, and tackling industry challenges and opportunities.
The primary objective of the Great Wine Capital Global Network Research Grant is to support research projects that provide practical insights to the wine tourism sector in the GWC regions while advancing academic knowledge in this domain. The recipients of the grants will have the unique opportunity to present their research findings at the GWC Annual General Meeting in November 2024, which will be hosted in Verona.
To be eligible for the grant, students (e.g., Undergraduate or Postgraduate) and early-career researchers (e.g., 5 years from the obtainment of a Ph.D. title) must be engaged in research focused on wine tourism, directly relevant to at least one of the Great Wine Capitals. The selection process will involve an international jury, which will choose one research project as the winner. The selected individuals will receive a scholarship of €3,500 upon selection, with the remaining €4,000 awarded upon submission of the final report. Additionally, grant recipients will receive up to €2,000 to cover travel expenses for attending the Annual General Meeting. In cases where attendance is not possible, recipients will receive up to €1,000 to produce a high-quality visual presentation of their research outcomes.
Grant recipients will be required to submit two reports. The first, an intermediary report of a maximum of 2,000 words, should include the introduction, literature review, methodology, sample, and preliminary results. This report must be submitted in Word format to the Permanent Secretary of the Great Wine Capitals – Global Network before 15th March 2024, 5pm (GMT + 1). Feedback on this report will be provided within one month. The second report, the final report, should range from 6,000 to 8,000 words and include the introduction, literature review, methodology, sample, results, practical implications, and conclusions. The deadline for the final report submission is 30th September 2024, 5pm (GMT + 1). The Great Wine Capitals website will publish the final report.
Grant recipients are encouraged to present and publish the results of their research, with acknowledgment that the work has been funded in part or in full by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network. The network expects to receive copies of these publications for review.
The Great Wine Capitals Global Network aims to select projects that demonstrate potential impact for the network, originality, innovation, significance for theory and practice, and conceptual and methodological rigor. Specific attention will be given to the applicability of the research topic to the GWC Network and its value to the wine and tourism industries, as well as the appropriate use of project funds as assessed in the budget.
Interested candidates can download the Application Form from the GWC website [greatwinecapitals.com] and submit their applications by the deadline. The grant application process opens on 15th June 2023 and closes on 31st July 2023. The winner will be announced on 15th October 2023.
By participating in the Great Wine Capital Global Network Research Grant, applicants acknowledge their authorship of the presented report and guarantee the GWC Network against any third-party claims related to the work. Applicants also agree to transfer the intellectual property rights of the report to the GWC Network, allowing the network to use it for promotional purposes. However, applicants retain the freedom to develop and promote their work independently.
