About Chalk Hill
Family owned and operated since 1972, Chalk Hill is located in the Chalk Hill sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley AVA found at the convergence of numerous naturally defined winegrowing regions in eastern Sonoma County. The iconic 1,300+ acre estate includes 314 acres of California Certified Sustainable vineyards, a winery, a hospitality center, culinary gardens, residence, stables, estate pavilion, and a wilderness area. The “Chalk Hill” name comes from the white volcanic ash and rocks found on the estate that adds a distinctive minerality to the wines found nowhere else. Chalk Hill Estate winery is known primarily for its celebrated chardonnays, led by the eponymous Chalk Hill Estate Chardonnay, and has become synonymous with high-quality, distinctive and terroir-driven luxury wines. With sustainability at the cornerstone of its practices, the estate is led by a philosophy of thoughtful development; more than two-thirds of the grounds remain uncultivated. Of the planted portion, four and a half acres are organic gardens that provide Estate Chef Alec Graham with a bounty of fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, including many heritage varieties. Decades of clonal research, sustainable viticulture practices and a minimalist approach to winemaking all combine to produce wines of character, richness and elegance. The estate features a range of microclimates, soils and exposures that require well-reasoned, site-specific farming protocols. It’s this unusual complexity of terroir that allows Chalk Hill’s winemaking team, led by Winemaker Darrell Holbrook, to create wines that are intense, balanced and distinctive.
