Champagne Shipped Over 33 Million Bottles to U.S. in 2022

The United States remains the top export market in both volume and value

WASHINGTON ― The Champagne Bureau, USA, today announced 33,720,198 bottles of Champagne were shipped to the United States in 2022, the most bottles shipped to any country outside of France. In addition, the value of these shipments reached more than $997.9 million (€946.9 million). Globally, Champagne shipped 325.5 million bottles in 2022, an increase of 1.5 percent from 2021. For the first time, the value of global shipments passed the $6.6 billion (€6.3 billion) threshold.

“The strength of the U.S. market in 2022 shows that Americans are still eager to consume Champagne,” said Gaëlle Egoroff, the Director of Protection and Appellation Promotion activities at the Comité Champagne. “In addition, American consumers are increasingly seeking out new moments for Champagne consumption outside of celebrations or special events, contributing to this strong result.”

The United States market for Champagne appears to have fully bounced back from the COVID challenges, far surpassing pre-pandemic shipment levels with a 31 percent growth from 2019 to 2022. This can be attributed to the continued return of in-person celebrations as well as to the growing popularity of Champagne as a wine to be enjoyed during the smaller celebratory moments, such as after-work happy hours or meals with family or friends.

As demand for Champagne grows and to prepare for future challenges, the Comité Champagne recently released the sector’s plan for the next decade. Under this plan, the Comité Champagne will increase its annual budget by more than 50 percent; create a new center of research, development and innovation; and continue to prioritize sustainable development.

The Champagne Bureau, USA, is the official U.S. representative of the Comité Champagne, a trade association that represents the grape growers and houses of Champagne, France. The Bureau works to educate U.S. consumers about the uniqueness of the wines of Champagne and expand their understanding of the need to protect the Champagne name.
