Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas Welcomes Ten Master Sommeliers to Its Prestigious Ranks

Portland, OR (August, 31, 2022) – The Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas ™ is proud to welcome ten members to the organization: Tyler Alden, Barking Frog, Everett, WA; Martin Beally, Canlis, Seattle, WA; Pablo Braida, Monarch Restaurant, Dallas, TX; Julie Dalton, Post Oak Hotel, Houston, TX; Erik Elliott, Heitz Cellar, Napa Valley, CA; Christopher Gaither, Ungrafted & Glu Glu, San Francisco, CA; Maddy Jimerson, Casa Tua, Aspen, CO; Alexander Powell, Grill 23, Boston, MA; Christopher Ramelb, Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, Honolulu, HI; Scott Turnbull, Winebow, Calistoga, CA. Additionally, the Court of Master Sommeliers, Europe welcomed Pierre Marie Pattieu, Jackson Family Wines, Hong Kong to their organization this month.

45 individuals from 16 states and 3 countries attempted the Master Sommelier Diploma Examination proctored by the Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas. The ten noted above, successfully met the qualifications to be awarded the title of Master Sommelier. The results were announced at the Krug Reception on August 31, 2022, at the Royal Sonesta in Portland, Oregon.

“Today we celebrate the success of the ten new Master Sommeliers and we also applaud the incredible efforts of all the candidates who sat for this rigorous examination. We are inspired by their dedication to the intense studying and pursuit of this certification. We are excited for the ten new Master Sommeliers to join us as we continue to create an impactful and modern organization,” said Emily Wines, MS, Chair of the Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas.

The Master Sommelier Diploma is the highest distinction a professional can attain in the beverage service industry. The Master Sommelier Diploma Examination consists of three sections: a verbal theory examination, a wine assessment exercise using the Deductive Tasting Method, and a practical component that focuses on hospitality, beverage service, salesmanship, and overall business acumen. Candidates must receive passing scores in each section to earn the highly coveted Master Sommelier title.

ABOUT COURT OF MASTER SOMMELIERS, AMERICAS

The Court was established in England in 1977 and sets the global standard of excellence for beverage service within the hospitality industry with integrity, exemplary knowledge, and humility. The first Master Sommelier Diploma Exam to be held in the United States was in 1987. The Americas chapter, which serves both North and South America, was established in 1987. Since then, 182 professionals have earned the title of Master Sommelier as part of the Americas chapter. The title Master Sommelier marks the highest recognition of wine and spirits knowledge, beverage service abilities, and professionalism in the hospitality trade.
