August 9th – Michele Chiarlo, a family-owned and operated winery in Piedmont, Italy, is upgrading the bottle and label for its original Barbera wine, Barbera d’Asti Le Orme DOCG, beginning with the 2020 vintage. The new design matches the artistic and sustainable visions of the winery.
The updated label of Barbera d’Asti Le Orme DOCG 2020 (SRP: $17.99) is designed by Italian artist Giancarlo Ferraris, with whom Michele Chiarlo has collaborated for over 30 years. The label reprises the cypress tree motif found on Chiarlo’s Nizza DOCG wines, Cipressi and La Court, in a brighter blue than its previous iteration. The Bordeaux-shaped bottle is more sustainable, weighing 360 gr (12.7 oz.) instead of the previous 540 gr (19 oz.). Furthermore, it has received the VIVA sustainability certification, allowing Michele Chiarlo’s products to be 100% VIVA certified in 2022.
In addition to creating the winery’s label art, Giancarlo Ferraris has worked with the Chiarlo family in the conceptualization of the winery’s Art Park. The Art Park is an outdoor exhibit showcasing original works of art by Italian, American, and Swiss artists and is located among the La Court vineyards, where Le Orme grapes are grown. The vineyards reside in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage of the Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont.
Michele Chiarlo Barbera d’Asti Le Orme DOCG is the wine that brought Barbera to fame in the United States and globally in the early 2000s. It is the winery’s original Barbera and the entryway wine to Michele Chiarlo’s longer-aged, more complex Nizza DOCG wines. The 2020 Le Orme is elegant and intense, with notes of fresh mature red fruit such as cherry and currant, layered with a touch of spice and beautifully balanced.
