Villa Bogdano 1880 Supporting the Old Vine Conference

The Lison based estate has joined the UK organisation created to protect and promote historic vineyards at an international level

June 9 2022 – Villa Bogdano 1880 has become a major sponsor of The Old Vine Conference, a UK non-profit company for the support of historic vineyards founded by Masters of Wine, Sarah Abbott and Alun Griffiths, together with prominent personalities in the wine world. This is a key step for the estate, which has a long standing commitment to maintaining biodiversity and wine history of its historic vineyards, including a rare specimen of Tocai Friulano trained using the “cassone padovano” method, a technique dating back to Benedictine monks.

The Old Vine Conference was established to promote such vineyards by creating a connection between the producers (which carefully manage a heritage that is not only natural but also historical and social) scholars, experts, wine producers and wine lovers. A community that, through collaboration and a common goal, endeavour to enhance and globally give recognition to heritage vineyards as a new commercial category, sharing vineyard best practices, management and marketing strategies.

“We are honoured to become part of this prestigious organisation, to make our contribution to the recovery of heritage vineyards and promote the wines that they produce. We are convinced of the asset that taking care of heritage vineyards is becoming, both in terms of the extraordinary quality of the wines they can produce and the positive impact that their care contributes to protecting biodiversity”, Domenico Veronese, owner of Villa Bogdano 1880, commented.

Today at the London Wine Fair, the first event took place featuring Villa Bogdano 1880 at The Old Vine Conference Masterclass entitled ‘Old Vines, New Category’ hosted by Sarah Abbott MW. The session, which took place in the Walk-Up Theatre, featured a diverse and eclectic set of old vine wines from around the world for an audience of wine industry professionals and press. The wine estate’s focus was on its Lison Classico DOCG 2019, 100% Tocai Friulano, which is produced from grapes grown in the vineyard dating back to 1943. A wine to be discovered and that intrigues wine lovers thanks to its intensity and structure, capable of releasing spicy notes that enrich those that are typical of this grape, but also a label that encapsulates the history of Villa Bogdano 1880, guardian of a territory with unique biodiversity and ancient vineyards that narrate the history of viticulture.

Villa Bogdano 1880

Domenico Veronese and estate manager, Lucio Tessari, responsible and respectful custodians, have been at the helm of Villa Bogdano 1880 since 2016. The single plot Estate is bordered by two rivers, and this has always been its great strength because, over the centuries, it has enabled the original features of the land to be maintained, which is still today a protected oasis. In the 106 hectares of vineyards, where vines grow in a clay-covered alluvial and calcareous soil, low yields are preferred, with priority placed on protecting the ancient vineyards and enhancing indigenous varieties. In addition to Tocai Friulano, there are vineyards of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, and the Malvasia variety has also been replanted. These choices have enabled Villa Bogdano 1880 wines to enhance their identity, winning prizes and finding a specific niche in the international market.
