Two Hands Wines and Industry Heavyweight Dig Deep into Australia’s Wine World with Instinctively Curious Podcast

March 18th – Wine lovers are invited to quench their thirst for knowledge by tuning in to the new podcast Instinctively Curious. A collaboration between Two Hands Wines and Harvey Steiman (former editor-at-large, Wine Spectator), Instinctively Curious is the brainchild of Michael Twelftree, founder, proprietor, and managing director of Two Hands.

“I spend a lot of time in my car, driving to the winery, to vineyards, to my place on the South Australian coast, and I pass the countless hours listening to podcasts. I mainly listen to podcasts about wine and wineries of the world, and so I thought we should try to produce a few ourselves, as I wanted to try a new avenue to connect with our  consumers around the world, given the second year of COVID and border closures,” said Twelftree.

When selecting a partner for Two Hands’ foray into the world of podcasting, Harvey Steiman was the ideal choice. Until his retirement from Wine Spectator in 2019, for 25 years Steiman’s tasting responsibilities included Australia, New Zealand, Washington, and Oregon. During his extensive travels to Australia, Steiman explored vineyards, interviewed winegrowers & winemakers, and explored every region and facet of Australian winemaking. Steiman developed an appreciation for Australian Shiraz and became a long-time friend and advocate of Two Hands.

Twelftree is delighted to bring his real-life friendship with Steiman to the digital realm via Instinctively Curious. “Harvey Steiman is a dear friend that I have known for many years. I was thrilled when Harvey agreed to moderate as his wine knowledge is exceptional, and I have always respected the way he went about his business. I am very happy with the outcome and am amazed at the technology that allowed us to record easily from the winery in Marananga and Harvey in San Francisco.”

Instinctively Curious is available on the Two Hands website at https://www.twohandswines.com/our-story/podcast. The first episode, What It Took to Make Two Hands Come Together, features Twelftree in conversation with Steiman. During the approximately 50-minute chat, Twelftree shares how he made the unusual transition from construction to the wine business, his philosophy on wine, his barrel classification technique, and how he narrowly avoided planting a vineyard in the wrong direction. Each episode of Instinctively Curious showcases a team member that is integral to the success of Two Hands, as well as a dialogue on relevant matters impacting the Australian wine community. Topics include Bringing Out Distinction and Unique Character from Every Wine and Connecting the Vineyard with the Wine Glass.

TWO HANDS WINES

The idea for Two Hands was born in September 1999 when founders Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz sat at a friend’s engagement party and decided it was time to make their own wine and market it on the world stage. The original aim was, and still is, to make the best possible Shiraz-based wines from prized growing regions throughout Australia. With so much Australian wine being sold around the globe under multi-region labels in a formulaic style, the intention was to break the mold and showcase the diversity of Australian Shiraz by highlighting regional and vineyard characteristics by allowing the fruit to be the primary feature of the wines. Two Hands’ first vintage was in 2000. Over the course of the next decade, Two Hands grew and earned numerous accolades. In November 2012, Two Hands was named in the Wine Spectator’s annual Top 100 for the 10th consecutive year, an achievement without equal by any winery the world over.
