Now Shipping A Commemorative Label and New California Rosé
SONOMA, CA (May 16, 2019) – Don Sebastiani & Sons today announced it’s celebrating the 20th birthday of its hugely successful Smoking Loon brand with the launch of a commemorative labeled bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon, a nod to the wine that started it all in 1999, as well as a new California Rosé.
From the initial launch of Smoking Loon, the wine brand immediately struck a chord to those with an appetite for adventure and who do not take wine (or life!) too seriously. Over the course of the past twenty years, the wine brand has continued it success by creating a cult-like fan following across the US and Canada, expansion of the portfolio from the original Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to over a dozen different varietal bottlings, and the continued emphasis on over-delivering in terms of innovation, value and quality.
The Smoking Loon brand, established in 2000 (first vintage 1999), has enjoyed steady growth and enviable distribution success over its history; with a current annual production of nearly half a million cases. The momentum continued in the first few months of 2019 with Smoking Loon up 4% in depletions versus last year, respectfully.
For this anniversary milestone, Smoking Loon is releasing a commemorative label and bottling of the 2017 Smoking Loon Cabernet Sauvignon. This label, with its bright orange and yellow color and proud smoking loon gracing the front, is closely reminiscent of the very first label launched on the Cabernet Sauvignon with the 1999 vintage.
Along with the commemorative label, the new 2018 Smoking Loon Steelbird Rosé, with an SRP $6.99, is shipping now. The wine is bright and fresh with loads of fragrant fruit aromas and flavors. The perfectly blushed pink color in the glass along with a delicious and balanced palate, makes this Rosé a great option for warm weather sipping. In addition to what’s in the bottle, the striking Smoking Loon Rosé label is incorporated with thermal ink technology that changes color when the bottle is perfectly chilled at 50 degrees; whereupon fanciful feathers on the front label change from a light pink to a dark hue, signaling the wine is chilled and ready to enjoy.
“When I step back and think it has been twenty years since we launched Smoking Loon – it’s a bit overwhelming. We are so proud of this brand and it has been a joy to watch it grow and retain its popularity with folks looking for good wine with not a lot of fuss,” Donny Sebastiani, CEO/President of Don Sebastiani & Sons said. “I want to see this wine brand continue to thrive for the next twenty and by continuing with creative innovation and giving our fans even more options, like this new Rosé, I am confident we can do it,” he added.
The new California Rosé wine joins the extensive Smoking Loon portfolio including; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Moscato, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Zinfandel, Malbec, Red Blend and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Smoking Loon Philosophy: Smoking Loon was established in 2000 on a very simple premise: good wine doesn’t need to take itself so seriously. Originally named for Don Sebastiani’s love of cigars and his father August’s passion for water fowl (don’t ask, long story), Smoking Loon offers an irreverent, tongue-in-cheek approach to enjoying wine. Our wines are crafted for those with an appetite for adventure, those in touch with their inner loon, those who consider pretense simply unnecessary.
